PS04PatternEditor For PS02PatternEditor Users --------------------------------------------- (Last Update: February,28 2004 by Armin Heinrich) If you are an user of the PS02PatternEditor than you may have noticed that the PS04PatternEditor works much faster, the look is nicer, there are a lot of new features and some features are on another place or are different. This document will help you to take full advantage of the PS04PatternEditor in a short time. Important: ========== Some menu shortcuts are different - so be careful - please check the new shortcuts first. Toolbar: ======== The Drums & Bass buttons have three functions: ---------------------------------------------- 1. Click to switch the Midi playback on and off 2. 'Right click' to change the Midi playback level (click on the upper half of the button to increase the level, and on the lower half to decrease the level) 3. The buttons will also be used to select if drums or bass or both will be imported (same function as the checkboxes on the PS02PatternEditor right of the pattern combo box) The last level will be stored if you switch drums or bass off. The current level will be displayed under the buttons (D=0 .. D=8, B=0 .. B=8) The 'Dyn' checkbox: ------------------- Is for future use (with upcomming 'PS04 Dynamic Drum SoundSets'). Quantize: --------- This quantize feature changes no data it only helps you to make easier entries into large patterns or into high resolution patterns. This setting will be used too if some events will be marked in the pattern field. And for some features in the context menu (see below) The Zoom feature: ----------------- 1. The old 'Auto Zoom' feature is replaced by the new zoom feature. (Auto Zoom is always on. If you change the size of the window the pattern field will also resize) (It will resize only one time after the resize of the window is finished) 2. Click to switch zoom on / off If zoom is OFF than the whole pattern will be shown at once (if the pattern is very large and one event is smaller than one pixel on your display than a scrollbar will be visible) If zoom is ON than only a part of the pattern will be displayed. 3. 'Right click' to change the zoom level (click on the upper half of the button to increase the level, and on the lower half to decrease the level) On windows 2000 or newer the zoom level will be 4 measures .. 0.25 measures On older windows versions 4 measures .. 1 measure The last level will be stored if you switch zoom off. You can use the small button in the bottom right side in the same way as the normal zoom button File Menu: ========== Open PS04 Seq File: ------------------- This will load a PS04 Sequence file (containing the patterns) Generate and Save PS04 File: ---------------------------- This will save the current pattern to the PS04 Sequence file Pattern Menu: ============= The old menu entries 'Build New Pattern', 'Double Number Of Measures', 'Half Number Of Measures' and 'Quantize' are all replaced by the new 'Edit Pattern Field' Edit Pattern Field: ------------------- 1. 'Beat' between 1/4 and 8/4 2. 'Division' between 4 and 48ppq (parts per quarter note) 3. Measures 1 .. 12 (The PS04 can create patterns with up to 1000 events The factory patterns are max 4 measures long) If you change the number of measures or the divisions the Pattern Field will be rebuild (not erased as in the PS02PatternEditor) If you change the beat than the Pattern Field must be erased and build new. Clear: ------ The PS02PatternEditor entries 'Reset Events' are renamed to 'Clear' Transpose: ---------- 1. Transpose changes works above the octave borders now. 2. Transpose changes all bass events if no selection is done 3. Transpose changes only the selected part if any selection is done Move: ----- Moves all events one step to the right or left You can use this to merge patterns The step width depends on the selected 'Quantize' value Special: -------- You will find here the old PS02 'Quantize Special' feature. (To allow the use of 48ppq pattern in the PS02) The 'Quantize Special Reverse' feature is to change the special PS02 pattern back in to normal 48ppq patterns Rename: ------- Renames a PS02 or PS04 pattern. The pattern name can't be changed in the pattern combo box anymore Midi Menu: ========== MidiDevice: ----------- The same as the 'MidiDevice' top menu in the PS02PatternEditor Bass Sound: ----------- To choose the playback bass sound. (Only bass sounds are available) Context Menu (Right click in the pattern field): ================================================ Cut, Copy, Paste, Clear and Repeat: ----------------------------------- All these features use the 'Quantize' setting from the toolbar. Level: ------ Can be set from 1..8 (PS02PatternEditor 0..15) The PS04 can not handle more than 8 levels All imported PS02 patterns will be converted to the PS04 levels Natural Level: -------------- 'Softer' will decrease the level of the currently selected instrument for one level step or leaves the level unchanged (by accident) 'Harder' will increase the level of the currently selected instrument for one level step or leaves the level unchanged (by accident) 'Both' will decrease or increase the level of the currently selected instrument for one level step or leaves the level unchanged (by accident) If this feature is used in the bass section, than all bass notes will be affected. Natural Timing: --------------- 'Forward' will move some notes of the currently selected instrument for one step to the right. 'Laid Back' will move some notes of the currently selected instrument for one step to the left. If this feature is used in the bass section, than all bass notes will be affected. If you like to move all events of the currently selected instrument use the 'move' feature from the pattern menu. Transpose: ----------- Transpose can be set from 0..3 for the PS04 (or to 0..5 for the PS02) The PS04 can not handle notes higher then B3. PS02 And PS04 Levels: --------------------- PS02 has 16 Levels (0..15) 0=no sound, 1=soft .... 15=hard PS04 has 8 Levels (1..8) 1=soft .... 8=hard If you import an PS02 pattern into the PS04PatternEditor the level will be converted in this way: PS02 PS04 ------------ 0 1 1 1 2 1 3 2 4 3 5 3 6 3 7 4 8 5 9 5 10 5 11 6 12 7 13 7 14 7 15 8 If you store an pattern for the PS02 the level will be converted in this way: PS04 PS02 ------------ 1 0 2 3 3 5 4 7 5 9 6 11 7 13 8 15
