Some Useful Tips

How to use other PCM sounds ?

The sounds (drums and bass) are stored in the file 'Sounds.syn'. You can replace the original one with any other file. You can use the PS02SampleEditor to build your own sound sets or use the PS02SampleLock to use new sound sets created by Soundside.de. And you can use the sound sets provided by Zoom (original, hip hop, rock). Just replace the file 'Sounds.syn' with the one you like more.

How to switch between PCM sounds ?

Preparations :

  1. Rename the file 'Sounds.syn' from the original set to 'Orig.syn'

  2. Rename the file 'Sounds.syn' from the rock set to 'Rock.syn'

  3. Rename the file 'Sounds.syn' from the hiphop set to 'HipHop.syn'

  4. Copy your favorite 'Sounds.syn' file as 'Sounds.syn' (the PS02 can't start without it)

Switching :

  1. Select utility
  2. Press edit
  3. Press the cursor left two times (you see 'load')
  4. Press edit (you see 'seq')
  5. Press the cursor right/left (until you see 'pcm')
  6. Press edit (you see one of the names from your '*.syn' files flashing)
  7. Press the cursor up/down to select the one you like
  8. Press store (loading is flashing)
  9. Ready! You can use the new sounds (the last setting is stored after you switch off the PS02)

How to double your patches from 60 to 120 ?

The patches are stored in two files:

  • 'User.pch' contains your 60 patches (editable with the PS02)
  • 'Preset.pch' countains 60 factory patches (not editable with the PS02)

You can replace the factory patches ('Preset.pch') with your own patches ('User.pch') after this you get 60 free storage places for new patches in ('User.pch').

If you like some patches of this and some of that file you can combine them with my tool 'PS02PatchEditor'.

How to switch between patch files ?

Preparations :

  1. Rename the file 'User.pch' from the original set to 'Orig.pch'

  2. Rename the file 'User.pch' from the rock set to 'Rock.pch'

  3. Rename the file 'User.pch' from the hiphop set to 'HipHop.pch'

  4. Rename the file 'User.pch' from the 323 set Part1  to '323-1.pch'

  5. Rename the file 'User.pch' from the 323 set Part2  to '323-2.pch'

  6. Rename the file 'User.pch' from the 323 set Part3  to '323-3.pch'

  7. Rename the file 'User.pch' from the 323 set Part4  to '323-4.pch'

  8. Copy your favorite 'User.pch' file as 'User.pch' (the PS02 can't start without it)

Switching :

  1. Select utility
  2. Press edit
  3. Press the cursor left two times (you see 'load')
  4. Press edit (you see 'seq')
  5. Press the cursor right/left (until you see 'patch')
  6. Press edit (you see one of the names from your '*.pch' files flashing)
  7. Press the cursor up/down to select the one you like
  8. Press store
  9. Ready! You can use the new patches

Warning: After switching to another patch file you loose all your changes in your current patch file (changes are only temporary). I recommend this only for testing of different patch sets (downloaded from other users) or if you don't want to change your patches and need more than 120 patches. The better way is to store your favorite 60 patches as presets using my tool (see section 'How to double your patches from 60 to 120 ?' ) and use 'User.pch' for your changes.

How to use other sequences files ?

The sequences (pattern, tables, songs) are stored in the file 'Songs.pts'. You can remove the original one with any other file. I hope to build my own rhythms (with other pattern, tables, songs) some day - up to now you can use the files provided by Zoom (original, hip hop, rock).  Just replace the file 'Songs.pts' with the one you like more.

If you like to build your own patterns use my tool 'PS02PatternEditor' (in the 'My PS02 Windows Tools' section).

How to switch between sequences ?

Preparations :

  1. Rename the file 'Songs.pts' from the original set to 'Orig.pts'

  2. Rename the file 'Songs.pts' from the rock set to 'Rock.pts'

  3. Rename the file 'Songs.pts' from the hiphop set to 'HipHop.pts'

  4. Rename the file 'Songs.pts' from the 323 set Part1  to '323-1.pts'

  5. Rename the file 'Songs.pts' from the 323 set Part2  to '323-2.pts'

  6. Rename the file 'Songs.pts' from the 323 set Part3  to '323-3.pts'

  7. Rename the file 'Songs.pts' from the 323 set Part4  to '323-4.pts'

  8. Copy your favorite 'Songs.pts' file as 'Songs.pts' (the PS02 can't start without it)

Switching :

  1. Select utility
  2. Press edit
  3. Press the cursor left two times (you see 'load')
  4. Press edit (you see 'seq')
  5. Press edit (you see one of the names from your '*.pts' files flashing)
  6. Press the cursor up/down to select the one you like
  7. Press store
  8. Ready! You can use the new sequences

Warning: I recommend this only for testing of different sequences sets (downloaded from other users or Zoom). Don't do any 'store' with any sequence or you might get a 'crderr' after the next booting of the PS02. The problem is: The PS02 stores only the current song settings not the needed pattern and tables into the 'Songs.pts'.
